Taxonomic History
- 1960 Luphocemus insidiosus Denis, 1960
- Revalidated, genus and species together. Korba & Opatova (2026) recovered a Moroccan/Algerian clade as reciprocally monophyletic with, and morphologically and ecologically distinct from, Ischnocolus, and revive Luphocemus Denis, 1960 for it — gen. reval. — with this species as its type by monotypy.
- The name had been through Cyrtauchenius, Leptopelma and Harpactirella before being sunk into Ischnocolus elongatus (Simon, 1873). The holotype (MNHN AR4519) was examined.
- Luphocemus differs from Ischnocolus in short thick posterior lateral spinnerets with a triangular apical segment, a raised eye tubercle and elevated cephalic region, larger chelicerae with a pseudorastellum, a broad slightly procurved fovea, no tarsal pseudosegmentation, spermathecae without lobes, and — distinctively — lifestyle: it builds a tube burrow with side chambers, lined with dense web and a small turret at the entrance.
- The male Korba et al. (2022) described as I. elongatus is not conspecific with this species; the authors say a species based on both sexes will be described separately.
