Etymology

The species epithet is in reference to Petén, the department in Guatemala in which the holotype was collected.

Taxonomic History

  1. 2020
    Psalmopoeus petenensis Gabriel & Sherwood, 2020
  2. Junior synonym of Psalmopoeus victori Mendoza, 2014 (Cifuentes & Bertani, 2022). Described from a single female from Uaxactun, Peten, Guatemala and diagnosed “by spermathecal morphometrics” without stating which measurements were diagnostic. Its spermathecae are lobeless and longer than those of P. reduncus, matching P. victori.
  3. Restored. Peñaherrera-R. et al. (2025) removed this species from synonymy with P. victori, again without any of the relevant type material having been examined by Cifuentes & Bertani. An emended diagnosis separates it on receptacle shape and the morphometric ratios BRV 58% / LRV 21% / NLW 94%.
