Etymology

The specific epithet is a matronym in honour of Matilde Hidalgo Navarro de Procel (1889–1974).

Taxonomic History

Transferred from Cymbiapophysa to Cyclosternum by Peñaherrera-R. & Guayasamin (2025). Their phylogeny places it inside Cyclosternum, and it lacks the four characters — prolateral accessory keel, ventral median depression, medial prolatero-ventral tegular projection and medial-to-apical embolar rail — that support membership of Cymbiapophysa.
