Etymology

From aenigma (Gr.), mystery, arachne (Gr.), spider and sine (L.), without. The name was chosen because the spider in many respects is still a mystery and the male has no tibial apophyses.

Holotype male of Aenigmarachne sinapophysis, and the only known specimen. Schmidt (2005) gave the locality only as putative; Osorio et al. (2025) examined it through photographs supplied by Radan Kaderka.

Taxonomic History

Known from a single male holotype (SMF 57342-84) whose locality Schmidt (2005) gave only as putatively Isla del Coco, Costa Rica. Osorio et al. (2025) repeat that caution and add the second species of the genus, from Colombia — so the genus' only securely located species is the newer one.
