Taxonomic History
- 1941 Grammostola inermis Mello-Leitão, 1941 Bücherl (1951) downgraded this species to Grammostola spatulata inermis. Schiapelli & Gerschman (1961) synonymised G. australis Gerschman & Schiapelli, 1948 with it and described a female. Nicoletta, Ferretti, Soresi & Pérez-Miles (2025) resurrected G. australis as a separate species on morphological and molecular evidence, redescribed this holotype, and noted that the 1961 female could not be located in the collection - they therefore redescribe a non-type female from near the type locality.
