Pérez-Miles et al. (1996) made Butantania a junior synonym of Homoeomma, moving Butantania hirsutum - now a synonym of this species - into Homoeomma, and figured its male bulb.

Galleti-Lima et al. (2026) synonymised Homoeomma hirsutum (Mello-Leitão, 1935) with this species, both types having come from Itatiaia.
